Choosing your new doors and windows can be a tricky task. There are so many aspects to consider such as design, size, colour and cost. On top of this, there’s also the environmental aspect to consider. With growing concerns surrounding our planet, and how we can make more sustainable choices, this may be an important part of your final decision.

You might be wondering: timber, aluminium or composite, which material is the most sustainable and eco-friendly?

As a carbon-balanced company, we’re very conscious that we offer products that are earth-friendly and high performance.

So, let’s break it down.

Are timber doors and windows sustainable/eco-friendly?

Timber, by nature, is a fantastic insulator and therefore already a great choice when it comes to reducing your carbon footprint around the home – but is it the winning eco-friendly option?

The key to buying sustainable timber is to begin with the credentials – just because a window or door is made out of timber doesn’t automatically give it a tick of approval. It’s all down to how the wood has been sourced. Here at Klöeber, all of our timber comes from FSC certified forests. The Forest Stewardship Council is an international non-profit organisation that is dedicated to promoting responsible forestry around the world, ensuring the highest environmental standards are met so, when you see products marked with the distinct FSC ‘tick tree’ logo, you can be safe in the knowledge that you’re supporting the world’s forests!

The thermal performance of timber also makes it a superior option for those who want to opt for sustainable and eco-friendly doors and windows, and you can expect low U-values of around 1.2W/m². Worried about maintenance? Timber has come a long way, and thanks to new technologies the maintenance of our timber doors and windows isn’t what it used to be. Our micro-porous paints and stains avoid any flaking, making timber a fantastic low-maintenance AND eco-friendly choice.

Are aluminium doors and windows sustainable/eco-friendly?

If you’re not completely sold on the eco benefits of timber (perhaps it doesn’t match your aesthetic) then you may be considering aluminium for your doors and windows. There’s a general presumption that metals aren’t an environmentally-friendly material, however this is not necessarily the case!

Aluminium is in fact one of the most environmentally-friendly metals, which is why it’s often referred to as the ‘green metal’, due to the fact it’s 100% recyclable. This saves a huge amount of energy and resources that are otherwise required to produce aluminium from raw materials.

There’s also a common misconception that aluminium isn’t a great insulator, and while this may have been the case in the past, thanks to today’s technology, aluminium is now up there in terms of performance. As well as being fully recyclable, aluminium (like timber) keeps U-values low, retaining heat well – the more heat that’s kept inside, the less reliant we are on central heating, which in turn reduces our carbon footprint.

Are composite doors and windows sustainable/eco-friendly?

And last but not least, we have the best of both worlds with composite/alu-clad doors and windows. Originally designed and produced in Denmark for the harsh winter climates in Scandinavia, this could be the perfect option for you if you’re torn between aluminium and timber. Featuring a softwood, meranti or oak interior and a low-maintenance aluminium exterior, you can enjoy the thermal performance, warmth and sustainable properties of timber, along with the modern aesthetics and durability of aluminium. It’s a win-win!

Which material is the most eco-friendly and sustainable?

While it can be argued that sustainably sourced timber is still the champion when it comes to environmentally-friendly materials, it has to be said that due to innovative recycling methods, aluminium and composite/alu-clad are also great ‘green’ options when it comes to choosing a material for your doors and windows.

Remember, choosing a suitable and responsibly sourced material is important, but be sure to also check the credentials of the company you’re purchasing from. Here at Klöeber, not only do we offer FSC certified timber but, we’re a C-Level certified carbon neutral organisation using only ethically sourced materials. When you buy from us, you’re supporting sustainability and a greener planet!
