When it comes to investing in the home, we quite often consider the interior first, for example, a comfy new sofa, change of wall colour, or maybe even a shiny new kitchen! Our exterior is often further down on the list of jobs, but with this creating the first impression of your home to visitors, it’s time to give it a little love. Not only will an improved home exterior look fantastic, but it will also add curb appeal to your property and perhaps even a higher asking price if you were to ever sell.
Budget can often be a concern, with home renovation costs quickly adding up. In certain circumstances, it might be an option to make good of what you currently have, but there are definitely investments that are worth paying out for in the long run and we’re discussing those here in this blog post. So, the question is repaint, repair, or replace?
Your Front Door: Replace
Whilst painting your front door is an option, it’s a very short-term solution. Your front door is the entrance point to your home and one of the first aspects that is noticed when approaching the property. From afar, a paint job might look ok but up close, you will soon notice the defects. Not only will a new front door enhance the exterior of your home, it can also add extra security which is both comforting for yourself and potential future buyers. When it comes to replacing your front door, there are many different options available and you might be feeling overwhelmed. First you have a choice of material and then there’s the design and colour to think about! Here at Kloeber, we’ve made life a little easier for you with our Front Door Design tool, allowing you to create your dream front door at home.

Your Render: Repaint
If your property has exterior render, this can start to look drab and dirty as time goes on. Fortunately, this can be easily solved. Use a pressure washer to give it a good clean and blast away the dirt, you might find that this does the job! If it’s still in need of a refresh after cleaning then you should consider using a decorating company to give it a new lease of life. You’ll be amazed at what a fresh lick of paint can do and the difference this will have on your home’s exterior.
Your Windows: Replace
If your windows have seen better days, then it might be time to replace them, as this is a much more practical long-term solution. There are a number of signs that your windows need to be replaced (aside from the obvious broken glass!). This can include:
- The glass fogging up – this is due to condensation and will eventually cause bigger problems such as mould
- External noise coming into the home – if your windows are allowing outside noise into the home then it might be time to upgrade to double or triple glazing
- The locks are bust – security is incredibly important and a dodgy lock can be a huge hazard, don’t take any chances and upgrade to a secure window design
- Your energy bills are increasing – windows play a big part in your energy bills and if your windows are no longer efficient at keeping the warm air in and the cold out, it could be costing you! Energy-efficient windows will give you a great return on investment in the long run, so why delay?

Your Roof: Repair (where possible!)
A leaky roof is never ideal, neither is paying out for a new one! This is a big outlay, but luckily in most cases, a repair is the most cost-effective and suitable option. If you notice a tile has gone awry or there are cracks in your roof, don’t leave it until the damage is already done. The longer you leave it, the more costly it will become so keep on top of your roof maintenance before the problem escalates too far. If your roof is sagging, this could indicate structural damage in which case it’s best to consult a professional and prepare yourself for the cost.
Your Facia Boards: Repaint
Fascia boards beneath guttering can be particularly prone to rot, which is why it’s recommended that you repaint your boards every 3-5 years to keep them fresh and rot-free. As the paint breaks down over time it exposes the wood to the elements which can leave it looking worn. Fascia boards will eventually deteriorate if left untreated so it’s best to keep on top of the painting. If your boards are beyond repair, you have to consider replacing them or seeking the help of a professional to restore them.
Whilst exterior updates to your home can be costly, in the long term, they’re always worth it for the future of your property. Ignoring issues can often lead to bigger, more expensive problems and whilst the initial outlay can be inconvenient, you’ll thank yourself in the future.
