Are you looking to give your home a makeover in 2020? A new front door can make all of the difference! With endless options available, it can be tricky to know which front door is best for you in terms of style and material. Below, we break it all down in our handy guide, to give you a better idea of which front door will work best for your renovation, new build or self-build!

Which front door material is best?

At Klöeber we offer two brilliant front door materials, timber and aluminium. Each material comes with its own benefits and features, and when it comes to choosing which front door material is best for you, it’s largely down to the style of door you want and your overall home aesthetic.

Let’s start by looking at timber front doors.

There’s a lot of misconceptions surrounding timber, especially concerns regarding the possibility of this material shrinking or requiring yearly maintenance. Thanks to new technologies, these concerns are a thing of the past! For example, our multi-coat microporous paint system means our timber front doors do not require painting for many years, and because they are made with engineered timber, they’re also designed to last, so there is no need to worry about any warping, changing of shape or size. Another benefit to choosing our timber for your front door material is the low U-values – timber is an energy-efficient material, making it a superb option if you’re looking to reduce your carbon footprint. And…it’s a great naturally-insulating material too!

Timber really is a great all-round choice.

The other option we have available, when it comes to choosing your front door material with us, is aluminium. This material is perfect for contemporary properties and looks stunning in a modern setting, and thanks to our special powder-coated finish, our aluminium front doors are incredibly durable and virtually maintenance-free, just like our timber. Other properties our aluminium has in common with our timber are; it is strong, it is secure and it is available in any RAL colour!

What style of front door should I get?

With timber and aluminium almost on a par, the style of door you prefer is likely to be the deciding factor when it comes to choosing the material. We have a wider range of designs available in timber including our classic styles that are popular with period properties, as well as modern designs. Our aluminium front doors tend to suit more contemporary homes but, don’t be put off, as they can add a quirky contrast to a more traditional home too.

We know that choosing the design tends to be the fun part, but we do know it can also be stressful making a final decision so, thanks to our gallery of real home installations, our showrooms where we have the styles on display, and our interactive door design tool where you can visualise the FunkyFront door of your dreams, we can, hopefully, make it a little easier for you.

Which front door material is more sustainable?

With growing environmental concerns, we know consumers want to be sure that they’re making eco-conscious purchasing decisions. As a carbon neutral company, with the environment at the heart of everything we do, sustainability is incredibly important to us and this is reflected in our product range. For example, our timber front doors (and all of timber product range!) are FSC certified. What does that mean? This non-profit organisation ensures the highest level of environmental standards are met through responsible forestry so, all of our timber front doors met this standard. It also means, by purchasing a timber front door from us, you are helping to take care of the world’s forests too.

While timber is the most sustainable option of the two, our aluminium products are fully-recyclable, so if you do decide to replace it in future years (maybe your design inspo changes or you fancy trying timber instead) it won’t end up sitting in landfill for years to come.

It’s not only the material itself that you might want to bear in mind either, the thermal performance of your front door is just as important when thinking about the impact you and your home are having on the environment. Luckily, although timber is naturally-insulating, all of our products boast a low U-value which, ultimately, means they all work as effective insulators and keep the warm air in, and the cold out.

Choosing The Right Front Door Supplier & Installer

When it comes to finding the perfect supplier for your front door, you want to ensure they’re trustworthy and reputable, or you could end up making a costly mistake. Trustpilot reviews (find ours here) are a great way to find out more about previous customer experiences. If you are environmentally conscious, you might want to pick a supplier whose ethos are inline with yours too. Also, be wary of internet-only providers, and where possible, head to a showroom in order to gain a better understanding of the quality of the product you are thinking of buying, and test the customer service from the team too – they’re the experts at the end of the day, so ask them questions, test their knowledge and find out if they really are the right supplier for you.
